Think Like A Genius

THINK LIKE A GENIUS

Item 3 of the “THINKING LIKE A GENIUS” article below says that “the most respected scientists produced not only great works, but also many ‘bad’ ones. They weren't afraid to fail, or to produce mediocre [things] in order to arrive at excellence.”

Reminds me of Maya Angelou, a black writer who led a fascinating life. Once, when she was young and out of a job, she saw a newspaper ad for a cook in a creole-style restaurant. She’d never worked as a restaurant cook and didn’t in fact know that much about cooking, but she applied for the job and got it. She returned home and asked a friend, “What does it mean to cook creole style?”

The friend said, “Creole-style means using lots of tomatoes, onions, and green peppers.”

“Oh.” So she went to work and cooked with tomatoes, onions, and green peppers, apparently to the satisfaction of all. Then, when she got tired of the job, she moved on to something else. And that, of course, is why she led such a fascinating life.

LAST LECTURE OF A DYING MAN

Please endure the commercials. The interview is fascinating, and Dr. Pausch really is a dying man. The talk is upbeat and humorous and not at all what you’d expect: he lists his childhood ambitions and how he surmounted the brick walls life put up to keep him from getting each one of them.
