Exploring Earth And Sea

We start with some fun items, then get scientific.

EARTH AT NIGHT FROM SPACE

These photos are both interesting and thought provoking. If you find the approximate area where you live, you’ll see that the amount of light in it at night reveals how populated AND how prosperous it is. North and South Korea are good examples. (Scroll to the right to see the whole world.)

VOICES FROM ALL OVER THE EARTH

On 6 BILLION OTHERS, you’ll first find hundreds of tiny faces. Click on one, and see people from all over the world answering a simple question, such as “What are you afraid of?” Or “What does love mean?” They answer in their own language; a translation appears at the side.

It may not be scientific, but it’s wonderful. Simply wonderful.

GOOGLE EARTH AND DESCENDANTS

A scientific friend, Lance Wallace, put me onto several fascinating sites, including GOOGLE EARTH. His wife says he spent several days glued to his computer after he downloaded that one, and, if you enjoy working with a complex site of this nature, you’ll do the same.

Of course everyone wants to see what their own house looks like, starting with a 3D aerial view of the continent and zooming down on it. And we all want to see if our car is parked beside the house. Some people are going to find they can’t see their house. You’ll understand more if you click on the option, “Google Earth Community.”

If you enjoyed the challenge of GOOGLE EARTH, do put “Google Earth” into the Google search box. You’ll find there’s Google Earth Community, Google Earth Plus, Google Earth Pro, Google Earth blog . . . and, as if that weren’t enough, MSN Virtual Earth.

WORLD WIND

NASA’s WORLD WIND “lets you zoom from satellite altitude into any place on Earth. Leveraging Landsat satellite imagery and Shuttle Radar Topography Mission data, World Wind lets you experience Earth terrain in visually rich 3D, just as if you were really there.

“Virtually visit any place in the world. Look across the Andes, into the Grand Canyon, over the Alps, or along the African Sahara.”

How does WORLD WIND differ from GOOGLE EARTH? I haven’t the foggiest. I’m waiting for one of you to download both, explore both, and share this information with the rest of us.

THE OCEAN EXPLORER

THE OCEAN EXPLORER “is intended primarily for teachers, but can be used by anyone who would like to explore things down there you never dreamed were down there!”

“WORLD’S BEST” SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY SITES

Most of the sites listed are for members of the public interested in science, including SCIENCE and NATURE magazines. You will also find a link to the SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY NEWS NETWORK, which has “fascinating science news & in-depth articles on general science, the environment, genetics, space, health & technology.”
