Those Marvellous Garden Blogs

SOME OF THE BEST BLOGS

I won’t say I’ve picked all of the best, because there’s simply too many “best” ones out there. But these are some I really like.

SOILMAN’S ALLOTMENT BLOG. For those Americans who don’t read British novels, I’ll say that allotment gardening is the civilized British custom of allotting gardening spaces to city apartment dwellers who would otherwise be out of touch with nature. SOILMAN says, “Looking back over recent posts, I realise I've painted a rather glamorous picture of my allotment gardening. I appear to have been swanning about in Neronian style, gambolling through acres of gorgeous flowers, pausing only to harvest some delicious morsel and carelessly scoff it in situ. Er, I don't know quite how to break this news: There is some hard work, too. Occasionally . . .”

In THE ILLUSTRATED GARDEN, VAL says, “Hmmm. I wonder if I can draw with one hand and pull weeds with the other?” The answer is “Yes!” Delightful drawings and posts.

And in GREENFISH WATERCOLORS, LAURA PRATHER gives us her watercolors, her cats, and her photos. Among other good things.

GINA says MY SKINNY GARDEN is about “my attempt to beautify my boring backyard. Landscape design and growing suggestions appreciated.” I am sure that, whatever other difficulties she may have in life, she is no longer bored with her backyard. If you’re really into gardening, you don’t get bored. (I used to plan new garden beds in the dentist’s chair, desperately mixing red and yellow roses while the dentist scraped and drilled.) Find out how GINA is entertaining herself this garden season:

CALENDULA AND CONCRETE

CALENDULA AND CONCRETE tells how a “community gardener moves to the 'burbs and thinks she can grow all things edible in her squirrel-ridden backyard.” Join in CHRISTA’s good time as she starts a new garden, rolling up that boring green lawn and adding some excitement to the place.

And then there's THE COMPOST BIN blog, with an article, "Squirrels Are Mean." I should send him Tivoli, the only cat I know who can catch a squirrel. The squirrels around here are fleet of foot, or they're no longer around here.
