HOW AMERICA GOT FAT

THE STATE OF THE UNION’S FAT lets you see at a glance which states are filled with fatties and which are relatively lean:

WHY WE KEEP GETTING FATTER: The illustration below shows us getting fatter and fatter. Sinking deeper and deeper into caloric depravity, it would appear. And it occurs to me that there’s a simple reason: as people get older, they get fatter. We get fatter with age because we usually take in the same number of calories as when we were young, but we get a little less active with each decade. (That’s not just my opinion. The Food And Agriculture Organization of the U.N. says so too.) It’s not deliberate wickedness; it’s just human nature.

So the Baby Boomers, who have bulged through our nation’s recent history like a goat through a boa constrictor, are quite naturally eating the same amount as before but exercising less. Thus creating a fat bulge around our nation’s middle.

Remember when running was the “in” thing? The Boomers were running, all these expensive running shoes came onto the market, and we, as a nation, were virtuously slim. Then, gradually, we sat more and ran less. The phrase couch potato came into being, and it applied to more and more of us. And, behold us now, a nation of fatties:

EATING MORE COMES NATURALLY IN THE FALL

We can’t help eating more in the fall: it’s in our genes. Or so psychologist de Castro thinks. And as I’d like to think, and I’m sure I’m not the only one. A few years ago, de Castro published research “showing that people tend to eat more as the weather cools and they spend more time feasting in larger groups.” Read about it here:
