DANCING HORSES

I simply fell in love with Matinee, the dancing horse, and played this video over and over:

And, while I was watching what they call “the blue horse Matinee” for the forty-ninth time, I saw another one off to the right. It turned out that Matinee, whom I will always love best, came in second for the world championship. The winner was the Dutchwoman Anky van Grunsven on her gorgeous black, Salinero:

Here’s another of Anky and Salinero, with equally amazing choreography.

PATCHES THE HORSE

Patches the horse may have problems with his self-identity, but somehow I don’t think he minds.

A SHETLAND PONY WHO THINKS HE’S . . . WHAT?

This is one cute pony – I wish they showed more of him.

And another highly unusual horse rescues a human, thus: “The young man was laying on his back helpless, covered in barnyard muck when he heard the clomping steps of giant Savannah, a one-ton, white gelding approaching.”

HORSES CAN’T PLAY BALL

This horse really wants to play ball and really tries, with the help of a pal with paws. Makes you glad to have opposable thumbs, doesn’t it?

LIPIZZAN HORSES

To me, horses are some of the most beautiful creatures on earth. If you too enjoy watching beautiful horses, you’ll love the following. The Lipizzaners at the Spanish Riding School in Vienna are highly trained – with rewards and praise – to perform the most elaborate kinds of dressage. I watched them practice once, and wish the experience had lasted ten times as long as it did.

ART OF DRESSAGE. If dressage seems unnatural to you, you’ll be interested in this site, which says, “The law of dressage--for it is a law--is a law of nature perfecting the natural. It is centuries old. Xenophon, noted Greek historian and military leader, created the art in Greece in 400 B.C. Xenophon stated an exact principle: "If one induces the horse to assume that carriage, which it would adopt of its own accord when displaying its beauty, then one directs the horse to appear joyous and magnificent, proud and remarkable for having been ridden." Xenophon went on further to say, "If the rider is not in harmony with the nature of the animal, then it will perform as a burden with no display of pleasure."

TITUS SHOWING OFF. To show that dressage is “a law of nature perfecting the natural,” here is Titus, a stallion who has decided all by himself to prance dressage-style – not for a human crowd, but for the mare in the next pasture. Notice how he keeps looking to see if she’s impressed?

MORE BEAUTIFUL HORSES. When the fairy-tale prince and princess drive to their palace in a carriage pulled by six white horses, those horses are of course Lipizzaners. This site shows that you can now vacation with royal horses.
